the story behind the estate

most locals in the early 1900s had agriculture as their livelihood. Οur grandfather - barba Giannis - was no exception. Barba Giannis was born in the village of Fourni in Corfu at the 25th of December of 1924. He lived most of his life there and as a farmer cultivated the vines, harvested the olive trees and practiced beekeeping. As a result he was able to produce olive oil, extract honey and make wine for the needs of his family. Fast forward a few decades later and we are around mid 1980s. In order for our grand father to continue this occupation mostly as a hobby now, his son buys the area where the estate is located.

the location of the estate

Almyros is located in the northern part of Corfu about 35 km from the city of the island. The area is surrounded by a large sandy beach of exceptional beauty, known for its shallow waters, which is a continuation to the west of the cosmopolitan Acharavi beach. To the east of Almyros is the Antinioti lagoon, an extremely important wetland included in the "Natura 2000" network full of wild flowers and reeds, as well as aquatic plants that are not found anywhere else in the Ionian Islands. In greek means salty. The naming of the area was from the Roman, pre-Christian era (509 BC). The names then were related to the environment they come from, such as: Karya, Lefkorachi, Agros (other parts of Corfu). The location Almyros was named because of the extremely salty sea of the area.

tradition in the process

following the same traditional processes that our grandfather used to apply, enriched with modern tools and techniques to ensure even better outcome. For our olive oil we collect the olives from the tree with the help of a handheld electric harvester before they fall down by themselves ensuring superior quality extra virgin olive oil. For our wine making we harvest the vines only using hand tools, including knives and/or shears, either manual or electric. After bunches are cut, they’re placed in collection baskets or bins and transported to the winery. This process is gentler on the vines and the grapes and ensures the collection of the best fruit. Last but not least for our honey we provide an apiary location with a large area full of a variety of flowers where bees can get an easy and continual supply of nectar and pollen.

"meraki" for the products

with the same mindset with our grandfather that the same olive oil, the same honey and the same wine will be consumed by our family members we put the same effort and care so you can taste and enjoy the same quality of products. Thus our production remains very limited in quantity ensuring we put all the meraki we can without limiting the purity and quality of our products. After all those products are the same products that we consume.

*meraki [may-rah-kee] (adjective) This is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love -- when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever it may be

respect for the nature

throughout the process of making our wine and producing our extra virgin olive oil we use only organic farming which excludes the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. For extracting the honey from our honeycombs our beekeeping is made with respect to the bees by checking the colonies periodically to provide all the neccssesary help and support when needed. When exctracting we make sure that the excess honey should be harvested from the honey supers and the honey in brood boxes is left to be winter food for the bees. After each harvest of our olive oil, wine and honey we send samples of our products to a laboratory to verify their purity.
